"No one can fully understand the meaning of love unless he is owned by a dog. A dog can show you more love with a flick of his tail, than a man can gather in a lifetime of handshakes." Gene Hill
Trick left me much too early. He left many good memories and like all my dogs taught me new things as well as offered reminders to be a better person. I've always called him "ever-helpful" and for good reason.
As a team we accomplished a lot. I didn't work very hard with him, I didn't have to. When I lost my heart dog and was having difficulty with motivation, he helped me through that time until I, again, found joy in training dogs and he did it gently.
He worked for me willingly but that wasn't where he excelled. Most Goldens enjoy being petted but he had a special way with people. He lived with me and my name is on his registration papers, but he was everyone's dog.
He looked for the person with empty hands and a heavy heart and made sure those hands petted him. Then he would need reminders as to who fed him. Irritated me at first, but I realize that he made people feel that they were loved and special when he devoted his attention to them. That's a rare gift. Over the course of the last two weeks, I've said my good byes every day, just in case. Tonight I said my last goodbye. Rest in peace, my sweet ever-helpful Tricky.
Trick is the boy that I couldn't part with, literally. He was the little puppy in the litter that when I looked down he was always there. I tried really hard not to form attachments until decision time. And it was at the last second that I decided to keep him and his sister. Call me foolish, but there is something about this boy.
Lots of fun learning during his puppy-hood. He is smart, sweet and scored well on the puppy structure evaluation, super retrieve drive, loves birds and lots of natural attention focus. Trick easily earned his WC at COGRC annual test and has earned his Junior Hunter title with Sooner Retriever Club.
Trick entered and ended his Novice career with three straight first places and two he went HIT with 198.5 and 199.5. Since then he's earned three HIT to date out of Open B.
In 2018 Trick easily passed his GRCA CCA. That same weekend after being out of the field game for a year, "point and shoot" Trick also earned his WCX. I literally had him out for training twice and he aced the test. I love a dog that makes it look easy. He also became eligible for the GRCA VC award, showing he truly is a multipurpose boy.
August 2018, Trick finished his UD title and earned his first UDX leg. With that final UD leg, Trick became eligible for the GRCA Obedience Hall of Fame.
When not showing and training Trick is my copilot as I work with nonprofits that serve special populations. As a certified therapy dog, he shares joy like only a Golden Retriever can do.
